
The 5-Minute Employee Development Conversation That Changes What a Manager Notices
A 5-minute weekly conversation installs more employee development than any annual IDP. The annual plan is a document. The weekly conversation is a pattern. Patterns change how people behave; documents rarely do. The structure below takes 5 minutes once a week, requires no template, and moves development from “I will schedule it” to “I already had it.”
The 5-minute conversation: (1) one minute — what progressed this week that was hard. (2) one minute — what you noticed you did differently and why. (3) one minute — what you want to try next week. (4) one minute — one specific way the manager can remove an obstacle. (5) one minute — one commitment named out loud, with a time. Each minute installs a specific development pattern, and the cadence locks it in. Most managers skip step (4) — the only step where the manager has to commit, not the employee. That is the step where development actually compounds.

Before investing in employee development, it’s useful to find out where your team thinks you are, in relation to where you want to be. When designing an employee development plan, the first step is to define your team’s long- and short-term goals.
